As the core foundation of karting operation, the track is directly related to safety, driving experience and maintenance cost. Different types of karts, site environment, frequency of use and budget will all affect the choice of track surface.

I.Why is the choice of track surface so important?

The track is not only the carrier for the vehicle to run, but also a key factor to ensure the safety of the driver and enhance the experience.

Generally, our karts are divided into adult karts and children’s karts. In addition, the choice of surface will also affect the durability of the project, the construction period, the overall aesthetics and long-term operating costs.

For children’s karts, with slower speeds and rubber tires, there is not a high demand for grip, but rather a greater focus on safety, anti-skid and comfort. For adult go-karts (both competitive and recreational), the speed, horsepower and tire grip are high, so the friction and impact resistance of the ground become very critical.

II.Children’s go-kart applicable track ground type

Children’s go-kart, it is divided into indoor and outdoor, children’s go-kart speed it is not so fast, and at the same time it is used in the rubber tires, it is not so high on the ground grip requirements. Of course, we consider the site operation of the higher practicality, wear cycle to be a little longer. Although the children’s karting on the ground requirements are not so high, but in order to long-term operational effects, we recommend the use of professional track-level flooring materials, rather than temporary PVC ground, and PVC ground is not applicable to outdoor, so generally we will use the track level. For example, no matter indoor and outdoor, we can also consider using professional suspension track to increase its abrasion resistance, and put it outdoor, it can be waterproof and UV resistant, and it is more beautiful, to enhance the overall image of the whole karting club store. At the same time, according to the different venues, we can also, consider the use of epoxy floor paint, if it is in the outdoor, consider the use of macadamized flooring, its UV resistance and its wear resistance are better, but this material track, there is a disadvantage that the ground is very slippery, tires spinning quickly, easy to skid.

III. Recommended Surface Types for Adult Karting Tracks

Adult karts have higher requirements on the grip of the track and the stability of continuous operation due to the higher speed and power of the vehicles. Especially when using competitive go-karts equipped with hot melt tires, the ground must have enough friction in order to guarantee the handling and safety when cornering and accelerating in a straight line at high speed. For recreational karting, it is recommended to use semi-hot-melt tires, which are not as fast as competitive karts and do not require as much friction on the track.

Therefore, for adult karts, we do not recommend using PVC flooring or suspension mats as the main track surface material. The most common and professional choice is asphalt flooring, especially Modified Asphalt. This material is widely used in highway construction and offers excellent resistance to rutting, high temperatures and aging. Some of the newer Modified Asphalt also contains high-tech components such as rubber powder and nanomaterials, which significantly improve the resilience and longevity of the surface, making it ideal for competitive level operations.

Karting tracks have very high requirements for ground level and friction performance, especially due to the low ground clearance of the kart chassis, any small difference in height or joints may affect driving safety and handling experience. Therefore, in the asphalt ground selection and construction process, the following points should be noted:

1. particle size selection: commonly used asphalt particles specifications for 10mm and 13mm. for indoor venues, we recommend the use of finer particles of 10mm asphalt material to provide a smoother surface and sufficient coefficient of friction, to adapt to the indoor low-temperature, dry environment. Usually we recommend to use large granular asphalt as the base, small granular asphalt pavement, saving costs and ensuring the track experience.
2. Flatness control: the construction must strictly control the ground flatness, to ensure that there is no obvious difference in height, in order to avoid the kart chassis scraping the ground, affecting the handling and safety.
3. Joint location planning: Joints will inevitably appear during the construction of hot-mix asphalt, and should be avoided in the high-speed driving line of the main track. It is recommended to set the joints in the buffer zone or non-critical driving area to minimize the impact on the smoothness of vehicle driving.

Also, depending on the budget, as an alternative option under cost control, consider using diamond flooring or high-strength epoxy flooring for low-speed recreational adult go-karting venues. These two flooring materials are particularly suitable for non-racing venues such as indoor experience halls and small commercial spaces. These floors have a certain degree of abrasion resistance and flatness, short construction period, easy maintenance, and are suitable for application in projects with limited budget. However, it should be noted that its grip and cushioning performance is weaker compared to professional asphalt, so it must be matched with reasonable speed limits and necessary protective facilities to ensure safety and user experience during operation.

It is not recommended to use materials such as PVC and suspension mats as the main track surface for adult karts as they are not suitable to withstand the impact and friction caused by high speeds.
